All About Helmet Wigs

What are helmet wigs?

Helmet wigs are custom-fitted and custom-made wigs built on a hard base (which is where they get their name). Standard wigs that pretty much all of us are familiar with have a soft and flexible netted base, allowing them to be flattened, folded, or stretched.

Helmet wigs, on the other hand, are MUCH more sturdy and are usually “molded” to the shape and size of the wearer’s head.

What is their purpose?

They provide extra extra extra stability for more complex, sometimes over-the-top styles that may be difficult-if not impossible with a standard wig.

Not every style needs a helmet wig

For simpler hairstyles, a standard wig would do the job just fine. Helmet wigs are most useful for elaborate styles with unusual proportions or gravity-defying shapes where additional support would be incredibly helpful.

Their other perks

You're basically building a wig from the ground up so that means you can control the direction of the wefts. Not only can they be made based off of the size and shape of your head but also your entire hairline! Have you ever tried on a wig where your sideburns were still totally exposed? Helmet wigs can cover that.

But keep in mind...

While helmet wigs look incredible, it can be an extremely tedious and long process to make.

Because of their rigidness, it can also be a challenge to pack and transport them! So always keep that into consideration on your next cosplay project.
